Make a Groundbreaking Discovery

Oklahoma is home to several prehistoric sites as well as two truly fearsome dinosaurs. Our state fossil, Saurophaganax maximus, was known as “king of the dinosaurs.” Discovered near Kenton, this predator was one of the longest & largest carnivores of all time. The Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, Oklahoma’s state dinosaur, was first discovered in the town of Atoka. Similar in size to the T. Rex, the imposing theropod featured a distinctive ridge of spines along its back. Today, dinosaur lovers can see actual tracks near Black Mesa State Park Nature Preserve, view a cast of the Acrocanthosaurus atokensis at Museum of the Red River in Idabel and uncover the world’s largest apatosaurus at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History in Norman.
